Although the scholarship has an emphasis on the Fine Arts, it is not necessary for the grant recipient to major in one of the arts. It is necessary, however, to show that the recipient demonstrate a continuing interest in them. The Fine Arts are defined as Visual Arts, Theatre, Arts, Speech or Music and in that order of preference.
Shannon (Hanson) Wirrenga was the first recipient of this award in 1985. She proceeded on with her artistic abilities and has become a freelance commercial artist since 1988. She is now refocusing on fine art and some of her work has become nationally known.
